Last July, a series of gray figurines—each no larger than 15 cm—quietly appeared in the street corners, beside old water pipes, and along the rooftops of the Central and Western District. Dressed in suits or hoodies, their somber expressions mirrored the modern urbanite, silently overlooking the city.
These were the work of Spanish artist Isaac Cordal, one of Europe’s most acclaimed street sculptors. His "Cement Eclipses" series embedded itself into the city’s texture, creating a silent dialogue with the urban landscape, captivating media, and causing passersby to stop and re-examine the ground beneath their feet.
This September, the "human observer" steps into the gallery. Touch Gallery is honored to host Isaac Cordal for his first gallery exhibition in Hong Kong, where he will personally lead an exclusive sculpture workshop: "Sculpted in Colour."
Can sculpture be "layered" like a painting?
In this workshop, Cordal will reveal a subversion of traditional sculpting techniques. Instead of blending or smoothing, you will learn to layer thin sheets of colored polymer clay—much like a painter layering pigment—directly onto the form. Skin tones, shadows, hair, and collars—everything is constructed through the accumulation of color.
You are invited to sculpt a person you know, a fictional character, or even a self-portrait. You are welcome to bring reference photos to infuse your work with your own personal story from the very beginning.
No experience necessary.
In this 3-hour session, you will learn how color serves as a sculptural tool and master the layering technique to construct an 8–10 cm clay bust.
Note: Finished pieces require low-temperature baking and will be ready for collection approximately 3–5 days later.
About the Artist
Isaac Cordal (b. 1974) is a renowned contemporary sculptor and street artist whose work centers on subtle observations of urban landscapes and social structures. His signature project, "Cement Eclipses," features groups of miniature figures inhabiting public spaces worldwide. These characters—with their recognizable yet mundane faces—are stripped of personal identity, allowing Cordal to capture the silent body language that triggers reflection on themes such as bureaucratic exhaustion, the isolation of the overlooked, and the unseen moments of collapse.
Cordal’s work has been exhibited globally, including the Völklingen Ironworks (World Heritage Site, Germany), the MURAL Festival (Canada), and the Estuary Festival (UK), and featured by contemporary galleries like Urban Spree Gallery (Berlin) and Galerie C.O.A (Canada).
