Flower

2026.05.02 - 2026.05.30

Exhibition Statement

Clay is never merely clay. It is the settlement of the mind, the condensation of time, and the genesis of creation. When an artist breathes intent into the earth and subjects it to the fire, it transforms into a resilient vessel, capturing the poignant grace of a flower in bloom. Every hand-wrought mark is a testament to the unfolding of life.

In this exhibition, we present a curated selection of six preeminent contemporary Japanese ceramicists, composing a joyous ode to "Flora" through the medium of clay. Their works immortalize the most radiant moments of blossoms and leaves, allowing the beauty and vitality of nature to resonate within eternal forms.

The participating artists include:

Fumio Matsutani Matsutani’s ceramics are defined by liberated, undulating lines (uneri) that capture the raw vitality of a plant as it unfurls. His work crystallizes dynamic tension, evoking the upward growth and soaring spirit of nature with profound poetic power.

Sakura Ooishi Inheriting the opulent traditions of Kutani ware, Ooishi utilizes three-dimensional decorative techniques to render intricate floral and insect motifs. With a microscopic eye, she breathes life into her subjects, transforming each vessel into a vibrant, breathing micro-cosmos.

Hana Ikushima Ikushima’s white porcelain possesses a unique luster and warmth, concealing extraordinary detail beneath a minimalist aesthetic. Through refined molding and carving techniques, she allows elegant "porcelain blooms" to flourish in the space—quiet, dignified, and awaiting the discerning eye.

Saori Yamaura Guided by a deep affection for the animal kingdom, Yamaura employs the vivid palette of Kutani ware to bring her avian subjects to life. Her bold colors and whimsical flourishes not only capture the spirited gaze of her subjects but also celebrate the primal, joyous essence of existence.

Natsuko Toda Influenced by her family’s legacy in running a kimono shop, Toda translates the delicate textures and soft tactility of fabric into the language of clay. Her vessels possess a fabric-like warmth and softness, radiating a cheerful energy that acts as a gentle, transformative light.

Kozue Ogata Using layered shades of blue, Ogata paints the joyful forms of flora onto white porcelain. The contrast between the icy, translucent glaze and the fluid cobalt brushwork offers a pure, crystalline interpretation of life’s flourishing beauty.

Flowers bring the joy of blooming; clay grants that joy an eternal form. As summer arrives this May, we cordially invite you to Touch Ceramics. Step into this light-filled dialogue between clay and flora, and discover a world brimming with hope and beauty.
