Exhibition Statement
“The more challenging the technique, the more it ignites my passion.”
— Taketoshi Ito
Renowned in Japan and internationally for his relentless pursuit of self-challenge, Taketoshi Ito creates porcelain vessels that, at first glance, resemble precisely cast metal, yet are in fact meticulously hand-thrown and intricately carved by hand. Drawing inspiration from the rational lines of Western architecture and the subtle interplay of light and shadow, he crafts poetic forms that balance rigidity with suppleness, presence with emptiness.
Using the demanding kaki-otoshi scraping technique, Ito carves delicate, filigree-like openworks that allow light to pass through and cast soft, ethereal glows. He compliments this with itchin —a technique akin to squeezing icing from a piping bag— creating three-dimensional lines that dance like sunlight scattered through leaves. The intricate floral patterns reveal his deep, intimate conversation with the very soul of ceramics.
“I deeply value the expectations from my supporters and you motivate me to exceed myself.” — Taketoshi Ito
At the heart of Ito’s work lies an unwavering devotion to form: only when the silhouette itself is flawless does a vessel truly feel complete. This exacting standard drives him to push beyond his limits, resulting in refined masterpieces that command breathtaking presence.
We warmly invite you to TOUCH Ceramics to experience the commanding yet exquisitely delicate presence of Taketoshi Ito’s porcelain works: architectural reveries shaped by hand, where the blade becomes a brush, etching serene dialogues of structure, shadow, and light into the very essence of clay: geometric poetry brought to life by radiant illumination.
