Exhibition Statement
Since the inception of Touch Ceramics, we have held a vision: to host a dedicated exhibition in Hong Kong for the contemporary master of tea ceramic artist, Wu Wei-cheng. After eight years of anticipation, awaiting the perfect alignment of time and spirit, we are honored to present his first Hong Kong solo exhibition this spring: The Beauty of “Wu-Wei”: The Clay Architect’s Utopia.
Wu Wei-cheng’s ceramic art is a profound dialogue spanning architecture, philosophy, and aesthetics. With an expansive global vision, he integrates the expressive freedom of the West with the introspective grace of Eastern aesthetics. Identifying as a "Clay Architect," Wu incorporates geometric spatial thinking into his forms, breaking away from the traditional rounded contours of teaware to introduce subtle angles and structural depth.
His creative process is guided by the Daoist philosophy of Wu-Wei (non-action)—a state of creating without contrivance or rigid rules. By following the natural temperament of the clay between his fingertips, he produces works that possess a unique, ethereal lightness while simultaneously manifesting the profound weight of time. At the intersection of tradition and modernity, East and West, Wu reinterprets the tea vessel through a contemporary lens, allowing clay to become a medium that reflects the pulse of our era.
For Wu, tea is both the origin of his life’s journey and the ultimate destination of his art. Born into a legacy rooted in the famous tea-growing region of Lugu, Nantou, he began his lifelong relationship with tea at the age of three. He understands that a vessel is more than a container; it is a bridge connecting the tea master to the universe, and the object to the soul. To him, tea and ceramics are inseparable. The practice of tea teaches him to cherish the subtle beauties of daily life, while the practice of pottery allows him to answer the "call of the tea" through form. Driven by the belief that "functional necessity is the wellspring of art," he crafts everyday vessels for the modern practitioner that are as ergonomic as they are exquisite, silently cradling the warmth and humanity of every tea gathering.
Wu Wei-cheng’s distinguished career is marked by numerous accolades, including Silver Awards at the Taiwan Ceramic Gold Awards (2006 and 2007) and selection for the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale (South Korea, 2003). His works have been exhibited extensively across Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong, earning high acclaim from tea lovers and collectors alike.
After eight years of waiting, we invite you to step into Wu Wei-cheng’s clay utopia. Between a pour of tea and the curve of a vessel, discover a world of composure, silence, and the transcendent beauty of Wu-Wei.
